The match between Barcelona and Argentina’s Boca
Juniors, on the Maradona Cup today, raises the number of gifts from the General
Entertainment Authority for football fans to 4 major peaks under the umbrella
of the Riyadh season.
And the number of gifts increases to 6, for sports
lovers in general, with the addition of two “Crown Jewel” professional
wrestling events.
Turki Al-Sheikh, head of the General Entertainment
Authority, puts sports, and football at the heart of it, on the map of the
entertainment season, the largest in the Arab world, since its launch in
October 2019.
In its first edition, the season hosted the “Super
Clasico” match between Brazil and Argentina, which enabled the Saudi public to
watch the most prominent stars of world football closely, led by Argentine
Lionel Messi, who scored the game’s only goal, and Brazilians Roberto Firmino,
Gabriel Jesus, and Thiago Silva, and others from both parties.
Two weeks
later, the same version presented the followers of Yasser Al-Qahtani's
retirement match, the Saudi football star, between the Al-Hilal team, coming
from the crowning of the AFC Champions League, and a team formed by Yasser from
current and retired stars from several countries, including the Italians
Francesco Totti and Andrea Pirlo, and the Brazilian Ronaldinho.
In contrast to the “El Clasico” between samba and
tango dancers, Yasser’s retirement festival was celebrated with 9 goals, with
Al Hilal winning 5-4.
Like all sports and entertainment activities around
the world, the Riyadh season has been temporarily suspended due to the emergence
of the Corona pandemic.
And when the season returned, in its second edition,
last October, Al Sheikh resumed his initiatives that combine entertainment and
sports.
Today, Riyadh hosts a rare summit on the Argentine
football legend Diego Maradona's Cup, putting Barcelona and Boca Juniors face
to face, weeks after the first anniversary of the departure of Maradona, who
represented the two teams.
In the second half of next month, the French team
Paris Saint-Germain will visit Riyadh, to meet a mixture of Al-Hilal and
Al-Nasr players, in an expected test match for the Riyadh Season Cup.
In addition to football, the two editions of the
Riyadh season hosted the two international “Crown Jewel” professional wrestling
events, which were attended by more than 90,000 spectators, between King Fahd
International Stadium in October 2019 and Mohammed Abdo Theater on the
“Boulevard” last October.
