Austrian sets
world record in Beijing
Austrian Matthias Maier became the first alpine skier
to win three consecutive gold medals at the Winter Olympics by retaining the
super long slalom title yesterday at the Beijing Olympics.
Mayer, 31, won gold in the downhill
"Downhill" at Sochi 2014 and the super long slalom "Super
G" at the "PyeongChang 2018".
The Austrian scored in Yanqing, north of Beijing,
1:19.94, ahead of only 4 percent of a second over the American
"surprising" Ryan Cochran Siegel "1:19.98", and Norway's
Alexander Amodt Keelde "1:20.36".
With his coronation, Mayer joined the elite Alpine
champions in three editions of the Games, including Italian Deborah Compagoni
in 1992, 1994 and 1998, and Norway's Ketel Andre Amudt in 1992, 2002 and 2006.
The gold holder said: “I don't think about history. It
was a tight race. I remember last Thursday’s rehearsals when we got a bit
worried about the wind, but the last two days conditions have been good.”
