Dubai Tournament:
Ostapenko reaches the final
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko overthrew Romanian Simona
Halep from the semi-finals of the Dubai International Tennis Tournament, when
she beat her 2-6, 7-6 (7-0) and 6-0 on Friday.
And Ostapenko set a date in the final with Russian
Veronika Kudretova, who benefited from the withdrawal of her Czech opponent,
Marketa Vondrosova, due to an injury to the right adductor muscle.
Halep, who won the previous year's tournament at the
expense of Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, started strongly in the first set and
easily won it 6-2 in 27 minutes, but faced great resistance from Ostapenko in
the second set and narrowly lost it after a tie-breaker.
Halep, the 2018 French Open champion and the 2019 Wimbledon
English champion, collapsed for the second and third grand slam in the decisive
third set, losing it by six clean games and thus the match in one hour and 36
minutes.
Ostapenko took revenge on Halep, who had knocked her
out of the semi-finals of the 2017 Beijing Games when she lost to her 2-6, 4-6,
and won her second victory over the Romanian in three confrontations between
them after the first in the final of Roland Garros in 2017, when she also
reversed her failure in the first group 4. -6, 6-4, 6-3.
It is Ostapenko's eleventh final in her four-title
professional career, in addition to Roland Garros her first title in 2017, the
Seoul Games in the same year, Luxembourg 2019 and Eastbourne, England, last
year.
